Every year, 8 million tons of plastic enter our oceans, harming marine life and entering the food chain. This crisis demands immediate action at multiple levels. The primary problem is inadequate waste management, particularly in countries with rapidly growing economies.
A three-part solution can address this. First, governments should implement extended producer responsibility laws, requiring companies to fund collection and recycling of their packaging. Second, cities should install more public recycling bins and launch educational campaigns about proper disposal.
Third, individuals can make a difference by refusing single-use plastics, carrying reusable bags and bottles, and participating in local cleanups. Combined, these actions could reduce ocean plastic by 50% within a decade. The problem is enormous, but with coordinated effort across government, industry, and individuals, it is solvable.
