When the Room Gets Hot

I used to think a good leader was someone who kept the peace. No raised voices, no tension, just smooth sailing.

Then reality hit.

Last year, two of my best team members had a blowup over a project handoff. In front of everyone. Voices sharp. Arms crossed. That awful, heavy silence afterward. My first instinct? Pretend it didn't happen. Maybe it would just blow over.

It didn't. It festered. Passive-aggressive emails. Sides being taken. Suddenly, my "peaceful" team was a war zone—and I'd let it happen.

Here's what I learned the hard way: Conflict isn't the problem. Avoidance is.

Real leadership doesn't mean no conflict. It means walking toward the fire when everyone else wants to run. I finally pulled them into a room—no agendas, no HR scripts. Just three humans.

I didn't play judge. I didn't assign blame. I just listened. Really listened. Turns out, Sarah felt invisible. Mike felt micromanaged. Neither was wrong. Neither was fully right. They just needed someone to stop the cycle of talking past each other.

We grabbed coffee. Laughed awkwardly. Found a fix that actually worked better than the original plan.

Now? I tell my teams: "We will disagree. But we will not disrespect." Conflict resolved well builds more trust than conflict avoided ever could.

Because at the end of the day, people don't need a leader who's always right. They need a leader who stays in the room when it gets uncomfortable.
