As automation threatens millions of jobs, policymakers are debating solutions to economic displacement. Universal Basic Income (UBI)—a regular cash payment to all citizens—has gained traction as one potential answer.
Opponents argue UBI would discourage work and be too expensive to implement. However, evidence from pilot programs suggests otherwise. In Finland's two-year UBI experiment, recipients reported better wellbeing and were slightly more likely to be employed than a control group.
Moreover, UBI simplifies welfare systems by replacing multiple programs with one streamlined payment. While the cost is substantial, the economic benefits of reduced poverty, improved health outcomes, and increased consumer spending could offset the expense.
